 Hits:1199 AddTime:2023/11/13 9:57:22
In the first two months of 2023, global freight activity is continuing to decrease as manufacturers and distributors strive to reduce excess inventory in response to rising interest rates and declining consumer enthusiasm among buyers. The following multiple sets of data show that global freight traffic in January and February is further decreasing compared to the same period last year, indicating that the inventory clearance cycle has not yet ended:
★ Container throughput decreases ★
Data shows that Singapore's maritime container throughput in February decreased by 6% compared to the same period last year, which is one of the largest declines since the first peak of the epidemic in April and May 2020.
Nine of the top 10 ports in the United States have experienced a significant decline, with cargo volume at Los Angeles Port decreasing by 43%!
After the epidemic driven surge in freight that began to subside last summer, the data clearly depicts a slowdown in consolidation. The loaded import volume in February 2023 was 249407 TEUs, a year-on-year decrease of 41% and a month on month decrease of 32%. The export volume was 82404 TEUs, a year-on-year decrease of 14%. The number of empty containers was 156035 TEUs, a year-on-year decrease of 54%.
In February 2023, the overall container import volume of the top 10 ports in the United States decreased by 296390 TEUs, with all ports except Tacoma experiencing a decline. The total container volume at Los Angeles Port has experienced the largest decline, accounting for 40% of the total TEU decline. It is the lowest level since March 2020.
▲ Comparison of Import Volume at Top 10 Ports in the United States from January to February
The throughput of Los Angeles Port in February was 487846 TEUs, a year-on-year decrease of 43%, making it the worst February since 2009. Gene Seroka, Executive Director of Los Angeles Port, said: "The overall slowdown in global trade, warehouse backlog, and the transfer of goods from West Coast ports to the East have exacerbated the decline in February. Although freight volume is expected to improve in March, it may still be lower than the average level in the first half of 2023
★ Air freight volume is also decreasing ★
The air cargo volume during the same period also continued to decline significantly. Air freight is usually used for transporting goods with higher value and higher requirements for shipping time.
The air cargo volume at Narita Airport in Japan decreased by 24% year-on-year in December last year, and then decreased by 33% year-on-year in January.
